The scout's view

The first time I saw Jakob Söderqvist was in the Lillehammer GP in 2022 in which he finished 7th. This race finishes in Hajfelltoppen (11.1km 7.2%) and has been a spotlight for Scandinavian climbers and puncheurs in recent years. At the time Jakob was racing mainly in XCO and it wasn't until next year when he started to race more regularly on the road. His 'spotlight win' in Loir-et-Cher and the 7th place in the WC U23 ITT that probably made him sign with Lidl-Trek were a result of his dedication while being still an amateur rider. That is a strong fact to consider when talking about his development because prospects nowadays tend to follow professional lifestyles since the U19 category or even before in some cases. Jakob Söderqvist is a 4th-year U23 but there's room for improvement barely seen these days.

It's hard to say whether Jakob will be a decent climber. As we say with other megatalents like Joshua Tarling, adding that climbing skill would elevate their potential to another dimension but physics are equal to everyone on Earth. Even if he tries to improve in that area, Jakob weights (according to ProCyclingStats) 83 kilograms. As the reader would understand, both Lidl-Trek and him would have to start a weight loss before climbing well. In my opinion, riders like Jakob should stay physiologically strong and focus on time trials and classics, where he excels.
